February 19, 2008, NANOG42 PC Meeting Minutes

  • Merit attendees: Gayle Terkeurst, Don Welch, Valerie Wittkop

  • SC attendees: Chris Morrow

  • PC attendees: Larry Blunk, Igor Gashinsky, Mike Hughes, Joel Jaeggli, Rodney Joffe, Sylvie LaPerriere, Keith Mitchell, Kevin Oberman, Ren Provo, Ted Seely, Josh Snowhorn, Richard Steenbergen, Todd Underwood, Bill Woodcock

  • Known conflicts: Kobi Hsu and Lane Patterson

PC Business:

  • Keynotes. Tom Killalea and Dan Cohn of Amazon were well received. A keynote speaker from the financial trading floor community, P2P community or heavily involved with network operations from a disaster recovery perspective would be of interest for Brooklyn. We have a three day agenda and could develop a track to follow the keynote if sufficient interest exists.

  • IPv6 Hour. This meeting takes place on the heels of the IPv6 experiment. Initial feedback indicates we should not repeat this experiment during NANOG43. We will seek additional feedback from the survey data prior to allocating time on the agenda for a second round of IPv6 hour.

  • Panels. Green Data Centers and the 100G Forwarding Architecture panels were well received. There is some interest in panels to discuss network operations within the financial services industry given the NYC proximity for NANOG43. Undersea cable deployments, physical plant security, multi-chassis considerations for scalability, and a part two for the power panel are being considered for NANOG43. We are soliciting topics and panel moderators at present.

  • BOFs. Danny McPherson led the Security BOF and it was well received. Louie Lee covered for Mike Hughes at the start of the IX Operator BOF given LINX break sponsorship timing conflict. The room was too small and several parties were standing in the doorways and the back. Perhaps we need to consider a region-specific IX Operators BOF given the number of local carrier hotels and remote peering options. This afternoon there are two additional BOFs – Peering & IPv4 Exhaustion.

  • Tutorials. Three were held simultaneously each afternoon to allow for more vendor specific tutorials than in the recent past as per survey requests. Concerns were raised regarding too many interesting options during a single time frame and the extensive use of Sunday for six tutorials. The mentoring-focused tutorial on Sunday sparked requests for a follow-up. We will seek additional feedback from the survey data prior to committing to a three-track format at NANOG43 and/or the ongoing use of Sunday for tutorials.

  • Research Forum. The Research Forum presentation is on the agenda for Wednesday therefore we will be dependent upon survey data for NANOG43.

  • Lightning talks. We received more requests than time allowed on the agenda. High quality speakers and positive feedback indicate this will be a daily program element for NANOG43.

  • The newcomers reception held during breakfast on Monday at the Fairmont was well received. We were able to introduce +50 newcomers to NANOG properly with a sit down breakfast prior to the Keynote. Many SC & PC Members participated as well as Don Welch of Merit. Continental breakfast will be made available in a similar break out room in Brooklyn.

  • Community Meeting. Philip Smith, Todd Underwood and Alex Pilosov represented the SC, PC and MLC. Their updates were well received. Jason Russell did a great job filling in for Andy Rosenzweig and Betty Burke on behalf of Merit on short notice. Well attended perhaps in part due to Switch and Data hosted event which started at the close of the meeting.

  • General Sessions. It is anticipated registrar and IPv4 depletion discussions will be an ongoing element. There will be a 30-minute block of time allocated to ARIN for updates led by Mark Kosters going forward. Should ARIN require additional time their abstract submission will include a time estimate and a second block of time on the agenda may be allocated. There is interest in soliciting topics such as the evolution of usenet news, lessons learned in the NYC interconnection market from L1-L8, concerns surrounding the repair of undersea cables, transit purchasing considerations, and power management.

  • General Session Timing. The start time for the conference on Monday and Tuesday was 10:00 am. Wednesday kicked off at 9:30am given 12:30pm close. Initial feedback in the hallways was positive. We will plan towards the delayed start time for NANOG43 unless survey data, presently unavailable, indicates the majority prefer an earlier start time. One hour for lunch was insufficient on Monday even with the walking distance options. Lunch options for Brooklyn may prove more complex and initial feedback indicates two hours should be allocated for lunch. We need to consider impact on the agenda.

  • Hosted Events. Initial feedback was highly positive for the offsite, all NANOG participants, hosted event by Switch and Data. We have a second event, made available by our conference host CRG West, this evening and thank both hosts for their graciousness. Survey feedback will likely include requests to continue with the after hours mixer format similar to what has become a tradition at RIPE, APRICOT and other operator conferences.

  • PC Admin. We perhaps had too many calls during the window between NANOG41 and NANOG42. Given holiday schedules, new year schedule adjustments, and that one half of the NANOGPC was new to the process we intend to reduce the calls in preparation of NANOG43. It is believed we will have at least four calls prior to June.

  • NANOG Support Admin. It has been requested that the video release form be made available on a website so that parties who submit are aware of this element prior to acceptance. Merit will work towards this end. It has been requested that the registration badges be altered to allow a name on both sides. Rodney Joffe is working with Merit on this upgrade.

The NANOG PC presentation and abstract tool is now open for lightning talks to review for presentation on Wednesday. Todd Underwood will distribute the Call for Presentations for NANOG43 within a week of this meeting upon verification that the tool is prepared to accept general session, tutorial and BOF submissions. Interested parties should submit tutorial, BOF, and general session presentation materials as soon as possible.
